TUESDAY THE 4th of MAY 2010

Today we went to the Paarl Mall and guess what I did…. Shop! Duh… It’s a mall…
We had lunch at Spur and the waiter started flirting with me in front of my grandparents. That was slightly weird and he kept looking at me. The food was good, but I was really glad when we left.
We shopped some more and at about 16:00 we went home. The rest of the day was the same as the rest of all the other days: watching 7de Laan, eating and going to bed. I did some reading too. My grandmother gave me an Afrikaans book to read while I was there. It was very strange, because my mind kept trying to turn the words into Dutch…

MONDAY MAY 3rd 2010 : BACK TO PAARL

The morning was very relaxed and I watched three Numb3er’s episodes while my grandparents worked. We had lunch together and then my other grandparents came to pick me up to take me back to Paarl with them.
After I arrived back in Paarl, we had a braai (bbq). That is the one thing that I HAD to do while in South Africa. Hey, true South Africans can’t say no to a braai. It was delicious, but I had to rush to ballet so I had to eat very fast. I did a pointe lesson and my teacher gave me some tips and exercises to do. I learnt a lot!
The rest of the evening was very relaxed and my grandparents went to bed early again. I stayed up and watched the crime channel. Not really a smart choice and I paid the price for it later that night when I woke up thinking I had heard something. It took a while for me to fall asleep, but I was fine.

Part 2

Yesterday was Saturday and Ouma Lena and I went to the movies. We went to see the Bountyhunter and we really enjoyed it! I had a huge slush puppy and jellytots!

After the movie we just wandered around Tygervalley a bit more and I bought a few things. The rest of the day was very relaxed and we watched a lot of rugby and cricket.

Today we went to church and when we came back, ouma had the brilliant idea to go somewhere for lunch. We went to a plant shop place that also has a restaurant. We first walked a while and looked at all the plants and pots etc and then we had brunch. We just sat in the sun and talked and had a good, healthy meal. I am not starving over here, that I can tell you!

When we came home I went to lie in the sun (always) and my back is a bit more red than it was. Hahaha my mission isn't to tan, I am just soaking up as much sun as possible!

Part 1

I feel so guilty for not blogging in 4 days, but to be honest I was just too lazy (A).

I did write everything down in my journal so I can still blog about the past few days.

Thursday

It was my second day at Paarl Girl's High and it was pretty much the same as the day before. I had to order their flipfiles and correct their spelling tests etc. I just felt really stupid because I also had to correct Afrikaans spelling and all the words looked so strange that I had to check the answer booklet to see if they were correct. My Afrikaans het lekker sleg geraak!

I was able to leave an hour earlier than the day before because the little ones had a netball match against Courtrai. I arrived home early enough to have lunch with ouma and oupa and after lunch we all took a nap. (I occupied the couch on the patio=REALLY WARM)

I also went to ballet at Joy Cargill's ballet school and it was lots of fun. We worked hard but also had fun! After ballet we watched 7de laan (as usual) and then just relaxed. I went to bed quite early.

Friday

Friday morning was different to the other mornings are school. We had assembly (saal) the first 2 lessons of the day. When the assembly starts, the national and school flag are carried in by 2 pupils. The one carrying the national flag didn't hold it high enough and it touched the ground. Mrs. Grindlay got so mad at her!
After a short message 3 pupils did a little drama piece. It was very entertaining and no one could stop laughing. Then it was the Miss. GHS finalists turn. They didn't do much... They basically walked and stood on the stage for 2 minutes...
I must say, I am very curious who the new Miss GHS will be!

After assembly we all had to rush back to class, because there was still a lot to be done! The grade 3's had been working on a recycling project and they had to make hats from recycled goods. They came up with the most interessting things! One girl made a hat out of old carpet and another girl made a hat out of an old coca cola bottle. They also had to tell us how they had made the hats and then we all went outside for pictures.

On Friday it is always markdag (marketday) and then people sell sweets and other things to eat. I had a delicious brownie with sprinkles on top! Yum! There was also a big speaker and we listened to music. When a Justin Bieber song came on the whole school went crazy! From the grade 1's up to the grade 12's! hahaha I guess he is more populare here than with us...

When the bell rang (end of the day) all the little ones came up to me and hugged me. One even asked if I would stay and be their teacher. I really had a great time at the school!

At home I went to lie in the sun again (I really feel like a lizard) and at 16:00 Ouma Lena came to pick me up and I was on my way to Cape Town again!

First day on the job

So today was my first day at Girls High School Paarl. I slept really badly last night because of the excitement and tension(just a little). This morning my alarm went off way to early (06:15) and I had an hour to get ready. Granddad took me to school in the 'bakkie' and then I waited at the reception till Mrs. Grindlay came to fetch me.

I was then introduced to all 33 pupils. Most of them are 8 ('turning 9' like they kept on reminding me') and they really look so cute in their uniforms. Today was the first day that they could wear their winter uniforms, but some of them decided to mix winter and summer. Mrs. Grindlay was not at all happy about that!

I was put to work and my first mission was to locate the photocopy machine and make copies of their maths assignments. Wasn't too hard (luckily).

Then they had a spelling test (gown, flower, crowd etc) and you could really see them concentrating. I was responsable for correcting the English spelling and the other teacher corrected the Afrikaans.

By then it was already 10:00 and they class had to go to art. So I tagged along to see what they were up to. The art teacher was friendly, but really strict! Even stricted than mrs. Grindlay. There is really a no nonsense policy at school and even the little ones have to work really hard. It's all about discipline.

After art we had a 20 minute break and I chilled with the grade 3's on the stairs. They are extremely talkative so I just listened. After a while, one of my old friends came to look for me and said I should come sit with them. It was a little bit awkward at first, but when we started talking the conversation just flowed.

The break was over and we went back to class (IN NEAT ROWS!!!!) and then it was time for a maths 'test'. I had deja-vu because when I was in grade 3, we had exactly the same tests! Shame, some of the children had forgotten to learn their 4 times table and you could see that they were panicking. Luckily mrs. Grindlay said that even if they made mistakes, it would be okay. You could see the relief on their faces!

The rest of the day went by so fast. The last 30 minutes of the day I was allowed to play 'teacher' and I sat in the special teacher chair. I told them all about my life in the Netherlands, but they were only interested in the fact that I can speak French.

The day was lots of fun and I am allowed to sit in the teacher's lounge tomorrow morning before school. Cool beans :)

I will write again soon!

PS. They call me teacher. How cute is that?! :P

From Cape Town to Paarl

Dear Blogreaders,

Today was another brilliant day! The sun was shining (again!!!) and it was 23 degrees! I really hope it stays that way but the weather lady has a different opinion...

This morning I woke up at 7, but the rest of the house only woke up at 10. Today is a public holiday in South Africa (Freedom day) and it celebrates 16 years of democracy. Go them!

At lunch time ouma and oupa van Niekerk came to pick me up and we went to visit ouma Anna (great grandmother van Niekerk) in the Strand. She is turning 95 this year and she is still going strong!

When we were driving back, we passed through some of the most amazing landscapes. The mountains, the green, the houses... everything is just so pretty!

Ouma Rikie made us meatballs and mash for diner. I am being fed so well here. :)

Tomorrow is my first day at Paarl Girls High and I have to get up really early. I am excited and nervous at the same time. Tomorrow I will also be able to write all about my first day on the job.

Greetings,

Jana xoxo

Safe and sound!

Last night I arrived in Cape Town in one piece! I was exhausted after the 11 hour flight. I forgot how killing an eleven hour flight could be! Luckily KLM is great and they provide you with lots of movies etc. I watched 2 movies (Fame and Oorlogswinter), listened to 5 CD's and read a little. Luckily I was also able to sleep, because I was actually exhausted!

When we were about 200 km away from Cape Town, we could already see the city lights. An amazing sight!
The whole trip went very smoothly and I was so happy when I saw my grandmother waiting for me at the airport.

We went home, had something to eat and talked a little. By half past 12, I went to bed and when my head hit the pillow I was out.

This morning I slept very late and when I got up, the sun was shining!
Picture this: A clear blue sky, sunshine and Table Mountain in the background.
Well that's what I saw when I looked out of the window! You don't hear me complaining!

After breakfast, my grandmother and I went to a shopping mall, but we only got a few little things. The real shopping will happen another day...

So my first day has been very relaxed, but hey,I am on African time now!
